Spain call up former Real Madrid defender Fran Garcia after Alex Grimaldo injury

Spain have suffered another injury setback, with Atletico de Madrid player Alex Grimaldo leaving their Nations League camp and former Real Madrid defender Fran Garcia called up as his replacement.

The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Grimaldo had been withdrawn from the squad after reporting discomfort in his left thigh during the warm-up before Tuesday’s match against Croatia.

Medical tests were carried out after the incident, and Grimaldo was left out as a precaution to prevent the problem from worsening.

His departure follows that of Eric Garcia, who has also left the Spain camp because of injury.

Spain produced a strong performance against Croatia on Tuesday, winning 4-1 in the second round of Nations League group-stage fixtures.

Luis de la Fuente has now selected Fran Garcia to fill the vacant position as Spain prepare to face Czech Republic and Croatia for a second time during the current international break.

The 27-year-old Garcia has made only two appearances for Spain, both in 2023, and has not been included in the national squad since.

The former Real Madrid player has featured in seven matches for Real Betis this season and has provided one assist.
