Georgios Donis praises Saudi Arabia’s ‘beast-like’ display in Iraq win

Saudi Arabia manager Georgios Donis said his confidence in his players had increased after their performance in the 2-0 victory over Iraq at Gulf Cup 27.

The result gave Saudi Arabia a perfect record and secured their qualification after the second round. The contest for the other qualifying place was left between Iraq and Oman, with Oman eventually progressing after a draw.

“I was pleased with the spirit the players showed throughout the 90 minutes, because they gave me confidence,” Donis told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiyah.

“We did not have a great deal of control over the match, but we created dangerous chances in order to achieve the result.”

Donis also praised the players for their commitment and thanked Saudi Arabia supporters.

“I congratulate the players for this spirit, as well as all the Green Falcons fans,” he said. “The players had to play like beasts to make these supporters happy, and that is what happened.”

The Greek coach also provided an update on left-back Zakaria Hawsawi, who was forced off with an injury during the match.

“It has become difficult to finish any match without suffering an injury,” Donis said. “Against Iraq, we lost Zakaria, and we will see what the examinations determine. We also have some other injuries.

“I want all the players to be available and do not want to lose anyone.”

Donis said the team’s performance had also delivered a message to supporters and called for continued faith in the squad.

“The players delivered their message to the public through this performance on the pitch,” he added. “We have an organised team, and the fans must have confidence in the players. They need to maintain that confidence.”

Saudi Arabia used a 4-4-2 formation against Iraq, with Donis explaining that circumstances influenced his decision to use two strikers.

“I prefer to have a strong player in the number 10 position, but Saleh Abu Al-Shamat needed a rest and Mohammed Al-Qahtani had only just returned from illness,” he said.

“That is why we decided to play 4-4-2 and rely on a striking partnership.”

Donis said his tactical approach was not focused solely on attacking shape, with defensive organisation also an important consideration.

“We do not focus only on the shape of the attack, but on defending as well,” he said. “At certain times we face problems, and every tactical plan depends on the players available.”

Saudi Arabia entered the match with their qualification place already guaranteed and completed the group stage by securing top spot with victory over Iraq.
