Algeria’s national football team coach, the Frenchman Alain Giresse, has addressed the performance of the Algerian squad during the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, emphasizing the imperative for the team to reinvigorate themselves to reclaim their former prowess.
Speaking to the national radio station on Friday, Giresse remarked, “The Algerian national team did not display the same level of performance during the AFCON as they have in previous years.”
He added, “The Algerian national team did not enter the AFCON with ease and was not in its best collective state.”
Furthermore, Alain Giresse continued, “Maintaining supremacy for continuous years is not an easy feat, and this happens to all national teams.
It is incumbent upon the Algerian national team to start anew to regain its form and position.”
Giresse’s comments come in the wake of Algeria’s performance at the recent AFCON tournament, where they failed to meet the expectations that had been set following their previous successes.
Algeria, who won the AFCON in 2019 under the guidance of former coach Djamel Belmadi, faced challenges in the latest edition of the tournament, failing to advance beyond the group stage.
The French coach’s words underscore the need for introspection and rejuvenation within the Algerian team as they look ahead to future competitions.
The pressure is on for the Desert Foxes to rediscover their winning formula and reclaim their standing as a formidable force in African football. As Giresse suggests, the journey to resurgence begins with a renewed sense of determination and focus within the squad.
