Bongani Ndulula calls time on football at 36 after memorable Orlando Pirates career

Former Orlando Pirates striker Bongani Ndulula has officially retired from professional football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a career highlighted by international appearances and a historic domestic treble with the Buccaneers.

Ndulula, affectionately known as ‘Drogba’, confirmed his decision after remaining active in social tournaments since stepping away from professional football. The former forward earned 10 caps for South Africa between 2014 and 2015 and featured at the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, his most memorable years came at Orlando Pirates, where he became a popular figure among supporters and was part of the squad that achieved a landmark treble in 2011.

Speaking to KickOff, Ndulula said he no longer had the energy required to continue playing competitively and had decided to focus on other areas of his life.

“I am done with football. I am now focused on doing other things. I have been playing some social tournaments to keep myself busy. But now I no longer have the energy to continue playing football,” Ndulula said.

Pirates treble remains career highlight

Ndulula joined Orlando Pirates during a period when the club was enjoying one of the most successful spells in its history.

The striker was part of the Buccaneers side that became the first South African club to win the domestic treble in 2011, cementing his place in one of the most significant teams in the club’s history.

He also produced moments that made him a favourite among Pirates supporters. One of those came when he scored a late winner against Santos in a league encounter, further strengthening his connection with the Buccaneers faithful.

Although he later moved on from the club in 2013, his contribution to that historic campaign remained an important part of his career.

Following his departure from Pirates, Ndulula continued his career with AmaZulu before later spells at Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United.

His career also took him onto the international stage, where he represented Bafana Bafana between 2014 and 2015.

‘Wearing the Bafana jersey’ a lasting memory

For Ndulula, representing South Africa at the AFCON stands alongside his club achievements as one of the defining moments of his career.

Reflecting on his playing days, the former striker highlighted his experiences with both of South Africa’s biggest clubs and his opportunity to wear the national team jersey.

“I enjoyed my time playing football. Besides playing for the two big clubs in South Africa, one of my greatest achievements was representing my country during the AFCON tournament.

Ndulula added that playing for his country was an experience he would always value.

“Wearing the Bafana Bafana jersey is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” he added.

From professional football to social tournaments

Ndulula has not completely disconnected himself from the game since leaving the professional ranks.

The former striker has continued to feature in social tournaments, using them to stay active and maintain his connection with football. He has now, however, decided that his playing days are over.

At 36, Ndulula leaves the game with a career that included a historic chapter at Orlando Pirates, international recognition with Bafana Bafana and an AFCON appearance.

For a player whose nickname paid homage to Didier Drogba, his lasting legacy in South African football will be closely linked to the memorable Pirates side that made history in 2011.
