Manchester United target Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey in January transfer push

Manchester United are hoping to strengthen their attack during the upcoming winter transfer window and have identified Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey as a potential target, according to Football Insider.

Brobbey, who also plays for Netherlands, has reportedly returned to the club’s list of attacking options after an impressive start to the season in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has scored seven goals in the competition so far, while he also made an impact for Netherlands at the World Cup, scoring three times in four matches.

This is not the first time Brobbey has been linked with a move to Manchester United. The club sought to sign him in 2022, when he was playing for Leipzig, but the proposed transfer did not go through.

Brobbey is under contract with Sunderland until 2029. His current market value is understood to be £35m, although Sunderland are expected to demand a significantly higher fee before considering his sale.

The striker was in outstanding form in Sunderland’s final match before the international break, scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City.

However, he suffered an injury during his first match for Netherlands against Germany and subsequently left the Dutch squad to continue his treatment with his English club.

Manchester United’s need for attacking reinforcements has increased because of their struggles in front of goal this season. Neither Matheus Cunha nor Bryan Mbeumo has produced the expected level of performance in the central striking role.

Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee have also seen their form decline, leaving Manchester United looking for an option who can provide greater threat in attack.

Brobbey’s performances for Sunderland and Netherlands have therefore brought him back into consideration, although any move would be complicated by his long-term contract and the fee Sunderland are expected to seek.
