Africa Cup of Nations 2027: Eritrea stun Kenya with half-time lead in Nairobi

Eritrea are ahead of Kenya at half-time in a surprise result on the opening day of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Red Sea Boys lead 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, despite Kenya controlling much of the first half and creating the better chances.

Making their return to continental competition after several years away, Eritrea took advantage of a defensive mix-up to move in front against the run of play.

The decisive moment came in the 36th minute, when Kenya’s defence failed to deal with the danger and allowed the Eritrean attack to break through.

The goal has left the Harambee Stars behind in front of their home supporters, with captain Abud Omar and his team-mates facing a difficult second half in Group D.

Kenya manager Benni McCarthy must now find a response from his attacking players after the break if his side are to overturn the deficit and avoid an unexpected setback in their opening qualifier.
