Marseille captain Timothy Weah handed one-match ban after PSG red card

Marseille captain Timothy Weah has been suspended for one match following his dismissal during Sunday’s Le Classique defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The United States international, who has Liberian roots was shown a second yellow card in the closing stages of the highly charged encounter, leaving Marseille to finish the match with 10 men as they struggled to recover from PSG’s decisive second goal.

Weah’s dismissal came only moments after Paris Saint-Germain had regained the lead through captain Marquinhos, who reacted quickest inside the penalty area to score from close range.

The Marseille captain had already been booked earlier in the game, and his subsequent challenge resulted in another yellow card, automatically leading to his dismissal.

The red card compounded what was already a difficult evening for Marseille, who eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat against their fierce rivals.

The result extended a worrying run of form for the southern French giants, with the defeat representing their fifth loss in their last six matches across all competitions.

Marseille’s difficult start has also made unwanted history, with the club enduring what has been described as the worst opening to a season in its history.

Following the match, Weah’s disciplinary case was reviewed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) Disciplinary Committee, which announced its decision on Wednesday.

The committee handed the Marseille captain a one-game suspension, meaning he will be unavailable for the club’s upcoming league fixture against ESTAC Troyes when domestic football resumes.

The suspension is a blow for Marseille, with Weah having taken on an important leadership role as captain while also contributing on the pitch.

His absence against Troyes will force the Marseille coaching staff to make adjustments as the club looks to arrest its alarming run of results and return to winning ways.

The LFP Disciplinary Committee also announced several other sanctions from the latest round of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 fixtures.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Paris Brunner received a four-game suspension, although two of those matches were suspended, following his throat-slicing celebration during PSG’s encounter with RC Strasbourg Alsace.

AJ Auxerre’s Christ Makosso and Le Mans FC’s Djibril Sidibé were each handed one-game bans and will also miss their respective Matchday Six fixtures following the return of club football.

Meanwhile, the committee also overturned yellow cards previously shown to ESTAC Troyes midfielder Iron Gomis and Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Noah Nartey.

For Marseille, however, the immediate focus will be on navigating Weah’s absence and finding a way to end their poor run of form when they face Troyes.
