Joseph Ede Oloko explains decision to represent Benin

Joseph Ede Oloko says his Beninese heritage made choosing to represent Benin a natural decision after receiving his first call-up to the senior national team.

The forward, who also has Nigerian roots, has joined the Guepards with ambitions of making an immediate contribution. Speaking to Joueurs Beninois, he explained that his connection to Benin came through his mother.

“My mother is Beninese, so I have always had that link with Benin. I also have Nigerian roots and I am proud of both sides of my identity,” said Ede Oloko.

The player said representing his mother’s country reflected both his personal identity and his family history.

“Benin is part of who I am and my family history. Being able to wear the Benin shirt and represent my mother’s country is something very special,” he added.

Ede Oloko’s immediate priority is to adapt to the national-team environment and establish what coach Gernot Rohr expects from him. He also recognises that he faces strong competition for a place in the attack.

The forward believes his work ethic and attitude can help him earn a role within the squad, alongside his ability to score goals.

“What I can bring is my mentality, my ability to work for the team and, of course, my goals,” he told Joueurs Beninois.

Although Benin are scheduled to face Argentina in a prestigious friendly, Ede Oloko insists the squad must not lose sight of its competitive responsibilities. The Guepards must first focus on their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, including fixtures against Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

“The most important thing remains the team and getting the results we need in the qualifiers,” said Ede Oloko.
