The Super Eagles of Nigeria have pledged to lift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy in honor of four devoted fans who tragically lost their lives while passionately supporting the team during the thrilling semi-final clash against South Africa.

Captain Ahmed Musa conveyed the team’s condolences and commitment during a solemn session with players and officials.

The tragic incidents claimed the lives of Chief Cairo Ojougboh, a prominent APC chieftain from Delta State, Deputy Bursar Ayuba Abdullahi of Kwara State University, Corps member Samuel serving in Adamawa State, and a Cote d’Ivoire-based Anambra State-born businessman.

Expressing the team’s grief, Musa remarked, “Yesterday (Wednesday), we lost four Nigerians because of the game yesterday.

We will observe a minute of silence, and after that, Awaziem will lead us in prayers. We will pray for their families because there is nothing we can do, and Insha Allah, on Sunday, we will lift that trophy for them and our country.”

The tragic incidents occurred as fans immersed themselves in the intensity of the semi-final match, underscoring the emotional connection between the Super Eagles and their devoted supporters.

The fallen fans, whose lives ended while passionately cheering for their nation, will be remembered with a minute of silence and heartfelt prayers led by Chidozie Collins Awaziem.

As Nigeria gears up for the AFCON final on Sunday, the Super Eagles are fueled by a profound determination to secure victory not only for the nation but also as a tribute to the cherished souls who departed while sharing the collective joy and heartbreak of the beautiful game.

The promise to lift the trophy in their memory adds a poignant layer of purpose to Nigeria’s pursuit of AFCON glory.
