Mamelodi Sundowns unveil kits celebrating CAF Champions League success and club heritage

Mamelodi Sundowns have unveiled new home and away kits designed to combine the club’s history with its growing success on the African and global stage.

The launch was featured on the latest episode of The CarWash Podcast, where former player Roger Feutmba joined Linda Mntambo, Teko Modise, Brighton Mhlongo and Delmain Faver to discuss Sundowns’ increasing influence across the continent.

The new shirts are the first Mamelodi Sundowns kits to carry two stars, marking the club’s second CAF Champions League triumph. The milestone is particularly prominent on the home jersey, which forms part of the club’s ‘Shine on Masandawana’ campaign.

The home design draws inspiration from the historic strip shown on the cover of the first edition of Kick Off magazine in February 1994. It retains the traditional yellow shirt, blue shorts and white socks, while incorporating red Puma logos, a green stripe on the collar and understated yellow detailing.

Rather than focusing primarily on nostalgia, the home kit has been presented as a statement of Sundowns’ ongoing achievements. Its two stars represent the club’s continued progress and ambitions, while the overall design pays tribute to its past.

Feutmba, who featured in the kit’s marketing material, welcomed the recognition given to the generation of players who helped establish the club’s success.

The away shirt has a stronger connection to the 1990s. Its blue strip, red Puma logo and green collar stripe are intended to recall the look and spirit of that period in Sundowns’ history.

It also features geometric patterns spreading across the jersey. The design campaign describes those shapes as ‘symbolising the power of the sun and the unstoppable force that defines Masandawana on and off the pitch’.

Both kits are linked to the wider ‘Fuelled by the Sun’ campaign, which presents Sundowns’ achievements as the result of “an energetic brand of football that reflects the philosophy of fearless ambition, relentless intensity, and a winning mentality that resonates with both players and supporters”.

The release comes as Puma’s sponsorship has remained closely associated with Sundowns’ rise as African champions, as well as their continued exposure in continental and global competitions.

Mamelodi Sundowns have also reached the third round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. The latest designs therefore reflect a club seeking to draw on the contributions of previous generations, underline its present success and maintain a forward-looking identity.
