Levi Colwill says Chelsea must use the international break to address their weaknesses and adapt further to Xabi Alonso’s methods after their disappointing 3-0 defeat by Brentford.
Chelsea appeared in control for much of the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday, but their performance deteriorated after the interval. Brentford scored three times to secure all three points and leave Chelsea with seven points from their opening five Premier League matches.
The result increased the pressure on Alonso and his players to improve before domestic football resumes. Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on 10 October, giving the head coach time to work with his squad on the problems exposed in west London.
Colwill will remain with Chelsea during the international break after being left out of England’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The 23-year-old missed most of last season with a knee injury and believes the additional time at club level can help Chelsea strengthen.
“There have been some good bits, some other not so good bits,” Colwill said.
“Luckily we’ve got a while now to try and improve. Hopefully, we will come out the other side flying, pick up our play, and become a better team.”
Chelsea controlled possession and created periods of pressure before half-time at Brentford, but were unable to maintain that level after the break. The hosts took advantage of the change in performance to claim a decisive victory.
Colwill said the squad must use the time away from Premier League action constructively as they continue adjusting to Alonso’s approach. Chelsea will return to league action against Bournemouth with the aim of building on the positive elements of their opening five matches while correcting the issues highlighted by Friday’s loss.
