Kanalelo reveals why Otladisa was taken off after 20 minutes against Pirates
Marumo Gallants coach Ronnie Kanalelo says Katlego Otladisa was substituted early in their Betway Premiership defeat by Orlando Pirates because of his lack of defensive commitment.
The winger was withdrawn after only 20 minutes at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday, despite appearing not to be injured. His replacement became one of the main talking points as Bahlabane Ba Ntwa went on to lose 2-0.
Kanalelo said the decision was tactical and followed Otladisa’s failure to respond quickly after losing possession.
“I was not happy with his defensive behaviour, the reaction was actually not there,” said Kanalelo.
“He always reacted afterwards, there were moments where he lost the ball and he would switch off.”
The coach also said Gallants had failed to make the most of two opportunities against a strong Pirates side, including a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper and an earlier opportunity involving Etemesi injili.
“And against a team like Pirates, we had two chances – one v one against the goalkeeper and before that we had the chance of Etemesi injili, we just [couldn’t use them],” he said.
“And against a quality team, you can’t do that. You need to take those chances when you get them.”
