Mosimane backs Zwane despite lack of starts for Mamelodi Sundowns

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane says Themba Zwane’s experience and leadership remain important to South Africa, despite the midfielder not having started a game for Mamelodi Sundowns this season.

Zwane, 37, has played in five of Sundowns’ 12 matches in all competitions, but each appearance has come from the bench.

Mosimane has nevertheless included the veteran in his plans, describing Zwane as an important part of the team and one of his captains. He said the midfielder’s experience made him particularly valuable in helping younger players understand the demands of international football.

“Experience, leadership. Let him tell [Puso] what it is to play for Bafana,” Mosimane told the media.

“What is expected to stay in a high level, and what must he do to find the boys. And patience also.”

The coach also stressed that Zwane could still influence games even if he was introduced for a short period.

“And by the way, sometimes you need to score, he must be ready. Rele struggled to score.

“10, 15 minutes, he’s got that aura, combining things.”

Mosimane acknowledged that Zwane’s current physical condition meant he was not ready to start ahead of Oswin Appollis.

“But you know guys, he’s not in a very good physical condition to be playing ahead of [Oswin] Appollis, let’s be honest,” he said.

The coach insisted, however, that Zwane’s selection was not being treated casually and reaffirmed his status within the squad.

“Nobody is messing around here, let’s stay things the right and he’s my captain.”
