Jonathan David punishes 10-man Real Madrid as Atletico seize control of Madrid derby

Jonathan David scored Atletico Madrid’s second goal to deepen Real Madrid’s problems in Sunday’s Madrid derby, with the Spanish league’s seventh round turning sharply in the home side’s favour.

The Canada striker struck in the 59th minute, finishing a swift attack that ended with Giuliano Simeone sending a low cross into the Real Madrid penalty area. Jonathan David arrived in the right place and found the net with a first-time touch.

Atletico Madrid needed only six minutes to capitalise on Real Madrid’s dismissal of defender Dean Huijsen and the penalty awarded to the hosts. Alejandro Grimaldo converted the spot-kick to put Atletico ahead before Jonathan David quickly doubled their advantage.

The goals came during a difficult spell for Real Madrid, who were unsettled after going down to 10 men. Atletico Madrid took full advantage of the numerical superiority and increased the pressure in the capital derby.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho responded immediately after the opening goal, making two substitutions in an attempt to restore balance. Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler were withdrawn, with Antonio Rudiger and Yan Diomande brought on.

However, Real Madrid were unable to recover before Atletico struck again. Kylian Mbappe and his team-mates were left facing a demanding task to get back into the match, while Atletico Madrid moved closer to securing victory after exploiting both the extra man and the confusion in the visiting defence.
