Aston Villa comeback leaves Tottenham and Roberto De Zerbi under pressure

Tottenham Hotspur’s winless start to the Premier League season continued as Aston Villa came from behind to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory, increasing the pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs began brightly despite having failed to score or win in their opening league games. Savio twice tested Zion Suzuki during the early stages, but the Aston Villa goalkeeper produced excellent saves to keep the visitors level.

Suzuki was soon called upon again, denying Archie Gray before keeping out a powerful Savio volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Aston Villa gradually weathered Tottenham’s pressure and began creating opportunities of their own. Emiliano Buendia forced Antonin Kinsky into a save, while Nicolas Jackson sent an effort narrowly wide. Tottenham responded with a long-range attempt from Sandro Tonali that drifted just off target.

The hosts’ problems deepened shortly before half-time. Boubacar Kamara’s shot was turned into the net from close range by Johan Manzambi, giving Aston Villa the lead at the interval.

De Zerbi introduced Mohamed Kudus at the break as Tottenham looked for a response, but they continued to struggle to convert possession into clear chances.

Kinsky kept Spurs in the contest soon after the restart with an important one-on-one save to deny Jackson.

Tottenham appeared to have ended their wait for a league goal when Kudus found the net, but the effort was disallowed after Andy Robertson was judged to have been offside in the build-up.

Aston Villa then extended their advantage against the run of play. Jackson squeezed a shot into the bottom corner, and although Kinsky got a hand to the ball, he could not prevent it from crossing the line.

Buendia effectively settled the match with 11 minutes remaining, sending a spectacular 25-yard strike into the top corner. The goal was greeted by boos from the home supporters, many of whom left before the final whistle.

Tottenham eventually scored when Conor Gallagher’s effort took a deflection off Matty Cash and found the net.

Jan Paul van Hecke headed home with virtually the final kick of the game, raising hopes of an unlikely comeback, but Spurs were unable to find a third goal.

The defeat leaves De Zerbi facing a difficult three-week international break. Tottenham remain without a Premier League victory, with mounting pressure on the club to turn their season around.
