Pedro Porro was forced off injured after just 17 minutes of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa on Saturday, dealing an early blow to manager Roberto De Zerbi and potentially creating an issue for Spain boss Luis de la Fuente.
The Tottenham right-back went down and was assessed by the club’s medical staff, but was unable to continue. De Zerbi consequently made his first substitution of the match in the 18th minute, replacing Porro with Archie Gray.
The extent of Porro’s injury was not immediately clear. Further details are expected in the coming hours, with Spain’s coaching staff set to await the player’s medical report before assessing whether he can take part in the country’s upcoming international fixtures.
De la Fuente included Porro in his latest Spain squad for the start of the team’s 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign. The defender’s injury therefore affects both Tottenham and the national side, depending on the seriousness of the problem and his recovery timeline.
A post from The Touchline | T on X described the development as “BAD news for Tottenham, Pedro Porro is INJURED!” on 19 September 2026.
Porro’s early exit came as Tottenham sought their first Premier League victory of the season following a difficult opening to the campaign.
They lost to Brentford and Newcastle in their first two league matches, before being held to goalless draws by Nottingham Forest and Everton. The sequence has left Tottenham still searching for their first win.
Their struggles have also extended beyond the Premier League. Tottenham were eliminated from the Carabao Cup after losing 3-1 to Liverpool.
The injury occurred during a match that offered De Zerbi the opportunity to end that winless league run, but the Italian was instead forced into an early tactical adjustment after losing one of his starting defenders. Spain will now monitor the situation closely as it considers Porro’s availability for the forthcoming international commitments.
