Marseille seek revival as Paris Saint-Germain face rare statistical test in Le Classique

Marseille host Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday in a Le Classique marked by unusual statistics, with the hosts struggling for form and the defending champions holding a goal difference of zero after four Ligue 1 matches.

Paris Saint-Germain have scored six goals and conceded six, the first time since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club in 2011-12 that they have failed to record a positive goal difference at this stage of the season.

Marseille’s difficult start

According to Opta, Marseille have lost 38 matches against Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions since the beginning of the 21st century. They have won 13 and drawn 12, with their defeat total against PSG 15 higher than against any other opponent.

Marseille have won only one of their past 13 home league meetings with PSG, drawing three and losing nine. That victory came in the most recent encounter at the Stade Velodrome, a 1-0 success on 22 September 2025.

However, Marseille have lost three of their opening four league matches this season and could suffer four defeats in their first five games for the first time in their Ligue 1 history. They have also lost their past three league fixtures, their longest such run since April 2015, when Marcelo Bielsa’s side suffered four successive defeats, including a 3-2 home loss to PSG.

Their defensive record is also a concern. Marseille have conceded 36 league goals during 2026, the joint-highest total in the competition with Nice before the start of this weekend’s fifth round.

Marseille’s latest home league match ended in a 3-2 defeat by Paris FC. They have not lost consecutive home league games since October and November 2024, when they were beaten 3-0 by PSG and then 3-1 by Auxerre.

PSG rely on away form

Despite their uncharacteristic start, PSG have lost only once in their past eight away league matches, recording five wins and two draws. Their sole defeat was a 2-1 loss at Paris FC on the final matchday of last season; before that, their last defeat outside the capital came against Rennes, also by 2-1, on 13 February.

This season, PSG became only the second team in the 21st century to play four of their first five league matches away from home, after Lorient in 2022-23.

The two sides lead Ligue 1 for possession. PSG average 67.4%, ahead of Marseille on 60.8%, while they also top the number of passes per possession sequence, with 5.5 compared with Marseille’s 5.2.

New PSG signing Maghnes Akliouche has scored three league goals against Marseille, matching Rennes as the opponents against whom he has found the net most often. He has played 396 minutes in all competitions this season, second among PSG’s attacking players behind Desire Doue, who has featured for 399 minutes.

Managers reach milestones

The match is especially significant for Marseille manager Bruno Genesio, who has beaten PSG six times since making his Ligue 1 managerial debut in January 2016 – at least two more victories than any other coach during that period.

Genesio, though, could become only the second Marseille manager in the club’s history to lose four of his first five league matches in charge, following Willy Kohut and Andre Gascar in 1938.

For Luis Enrique, Sunday’s match will be his 182nd in charge of PSG. His previous 181 games have produced 120 wins, 34 draws and 27 defeats. By taking charge against Marseille, he will surpass his number of matches as Barcelona manager and become the second-most experienced coach in PSG history among those to have held the role, behind Luis Fernandez on 244 matches and Georges Peyroche on 211.
