Real Madrid’s dramatic victory over AEK Athens did little to conceal the uncertainty in their performance, with Arda Guler’s absence exposing a lack of balance and creativity in attack.
The Turkish midfielder was rested to avoid travelling and playing in Athens, a decision which suggested manager Jose Mourinho had prioritised the upcoming meeting with Valencia at Mestalla. Although the result ultimately appeared to justify that choice, Real Madrid’s display showed how much they missed Guler’s vision, passing and understanding of space.
According to AS, it would be too simplistic to blame the team’s struggles solely on Vinicius Junior’s return to the starting line-up. The Brazilian endured a difficult game and was unable to make the expected impact, but the wider issue was Mourinho’s tactical decision to sacrifice an additional midfielder in order to field another winger.
Real Madrid lose their attacking balance
Without Guler, Real Madrid lacked the precision and awareness needed to exploit spaces. Their attacks relied more heavily on direct running and physical power than on controlled build-up play and carefully measured passes.
Guler has increasingly become a key part of the side because of his ability to improve the creativity and attacking quality of those around him. He also helps maintain the team’s shape when Real Madrid have possession.
His absence contributed to a disjointed performance, allowing AEK Athens to apply pressure and look more dangerous than expected. Aboubakary Koita was one of the Greek side’s most effective players, showing confidence during attacking transitions and displaying considerable technical quality. Jasinovic and Maier also caught the eye early on, while Real Madrid struggled to recover defensively and left spaces between their lines.
Eduardo Camavinga gradually improved, but he could not provide the same control as Aurelien Tchouameni in the holding midfield role. Camavinga’s tendency to move with greater freedom and occasionally drift away from the tactical duties of the position affected Real Madrid’s balance.
The visitors began to regain control as Jude Bellingham grew more influential. His constant movement, ability to attack central areas and willingness to move wide according to the demands of the match helped lead the response. Real Madrid increased the pressure as the England midfielder became more prominent, although their play still lacked consistency and clear purpose.
Wide areas provide the route back
Vinicius was unable to find the room required to beat AEK Athens’ defenders, while Mbappe’s influence was largely limited to finishing situations. Diomande was also less threatening when deployed on the right.
Real Madrid did, however, identify opportunities on the flanks. Denzel Dumfries and Cucurella repeatedly moved into areas AEK Athens appeared vulnerable, prompting Mourinho to encourage his players to target those weaknesses.
AEK Athens took the lead twice, but Real Madrid continued to fight until the closing stages and refused to settle for a draw. The victory was secured through determination and attacking urgency rather than a clear superiority in ideas or technical solutions.
Federico Valverde was among those who threatened to decide the match late on. Dumfries was also important in the build-up to the 2-2 equaliser, racing in behind Koita after receiving an excellent pass from Bellingham before sending the ball across to Mbappe.
Valencia face Real Madrid in La Liga on 07 November 2026. AEK Athens are listed in the Greek Super League, while Levadiakos are scheduled to play on 08 November 2026.
