Morocco take on Ghana as Atlas Lions seek first win over Carlos Queiroz

Morocco will face Ghana in a friendly on 4 October, giving the Atlas Lions another opportunity to end their winless record against Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that the match will be played at the Grand Stadium of Tangier.

In a message announcing the fixture, the federation said: “Our National Team will face Ghana in a friendly match on Sunday, October 4, at the Grand Stadium of Tangier.”

The game will follow Morocco’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. They are scheduled to play Gabon on 25 September before meeting Lesotho on 29 September.

Queiroz is in his second spell in charge of Ghana and has guided the Black Stars to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Morocco have never beaten a side managed by the Portuguese coach, despite facing him with four different national teams. The meeting with Ghana will be the fifth time the Atlas Lions have come up against one of his teams.

According to figures from Transfermarkt, Morocco have played four matches against teams coached by Queiroz across all competitions. They have lost three and drawn one.

Their first meeting came 24 years ago in the group stage of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. Queiroz was then in charge of South Africa, who defeated Morocco 3-1.

The coach faced Morocco again 16 years later at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, this time as manager of Iran. The Asian side won 1-0 in the group stage.

Queiroz’s third match against Morocco came in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, when he led Egypt to a 1-0 victory and elimination of the Atlas Lions.

The most recent encounter took place last year, with Queiroz managing Oman in the group stage of the Arab Cup. That match ended in a goalless draw.

The friendly against Ghana therefore offers Morocco the chance to claim their first victory over a Queiroz-managed team, although the match will not carry competitive significance.
