Ibrahim Maza targets Bayer Leverkusen return against RB Leipzig

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Ibrahim Maza is making progress in his recovery from illness as he targets a return against RB Leipzig on Sunday.

The 20-year-old missed Leverkusen’s 2-0 Europa League victory over NK Celje after falling ill before the match.

Maza’s absence had been uncertain in the build-up to the European opener, but Leverkusen have received an encouraging update. Head coach Carles Martínez confirmed that the attacking midfielder was able to complete some work on Wednesday afternoon as he begins preparing for a potential comeback.

“He was able to do at least a little in the afternoon to prepare himself to be available again,” Martinez said.

Despite the positive signs, the manager cautioned that Maza is not fully clear of the illness. “But we will see. Of course, he is ill,” the Spaniard added.

Leverkusen will continue to assess Maza over the next few days before deciding whether he can resume full training and feature against Leipzig. Martinez remains hopeful that the young attacker can recover in time.

“I hope he will be ready by Sunday and can deliver a good performance,” the coach said.

A return would give Leverkusen an additional creative option for the Bundesliga clash, but the final call will depend on Maza’s health and training response.
