Felix Agu nears Werder Bremen return after calf injury

Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu is nearing a return to the matchday squad after more than five months without competitive action.

The 26-year-old has been recovering from a calf muscle injury and is now expected to be available following the upcoming international break.

Peter Niemeyer, Werder’s head of professional football, offered a positive update but stressed that the club will not rush its decision. “He is on a good path,” Niemeyer said, while acknowledging the uncertainty that can accompany muscle problems. “With muscular injuries, it is always difficult to predict exactly when he will return.”

The extended October break should give Agu valuable time to continue building fitness and durability. Niemeyer said Werder presently expect him to rejoin the group after the pause, potentially putting him in contention for the Friday fixture against Borussia Dortmund on October 9.

Agu’s contract situation has been placed on hold during his recovery. His current deal expires next summer, but formal extension talks are not yet underway because the club’s immediate priority is his physical condition.

“We are in contact with the agency and Felix,” Niemeyer explained. “His focus is first on getting fit and becoming stable. We are therefore not currently talking specifically about a contract extension.”
