Tshepang Moremi available as Orlando Pirates resume league campaign

Orlando Pirates could have Tshepang Moremi back in their squad when they return to Betway Premiership action against Durban City at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Thursday.

The attacker has completed a two-match suspension in the CAF Champions League and is now eligible for selection as the Buccaneers turn their attention back to domestic football.

Pirates have spent the past two weeks competing in Africa, successfully overcoming La Cure Waves in the preliminary round to reach the next stage of the CAF Champions League. They secured their progress with a 3-1 victory in the second leg at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.

Moremi was unavailable for both of the club’s recent continental fixtures because of suspension rather than injury. Pirates had confirmed before the second leg that he would serve the final game of his ban against the Mauritian champions.

“Tshepang Moremi will serve his second and final match of his suspension. He will be available for selection in the next round, should the Buccaneers progress,” the club said on its official website.

Following the victory over La Cure Waves, Moremi is therefore available for the league match against Durban City, although his involvement will depend on coach Abdeslam Ouaddou’s selection.

Pirates looking to close league gap

The return of Moremi could provide Ouaddou with an additional attacking option as the defending champions attempt to reduce the gap to early Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Pirates have collected 13 points from five matches and are seven points behind Sundowns, who have 20 points from eight games. The Soweto club also have three matches in hand on the Brazilians, giving them the opportunity to make up ground as the season develops.

Their immediate priority is Thursday’s home fixture, which marks their return to league competition after the focus on the CAF Champions League.

Pirates must nevertheless continue to manage a significant injury list. Andre De Jong, Thalente Mbatha, Evidence Makgopa, Gamphani Lungu and Sihle Nduli were all confirmed as unavailable ahead of the second leg against La Cure Waves.

There was more encouraging news over captain Nkosinathi Sibisi, who had recovered from injury and was included in the selection for Saturday’s match. The defender came on during the second half, replacing Lebone Seema against the Mauritian champions.

Moremi’s availability gives Pirates another option as they balance their domestic campaign with their continued involvement in continental competition.
