Ziyech targets new success in Brazil after leaving Morocco’s Wydad

Morocco international Hakim Ziyech says his move to Brazilian side Botafogo is driven by ambition rather than a desire to wind down his career.

The 33-year-old has signed a contract with Botafogo until the end of 2028 after leaving Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, where he spent a short spell.

Ziyech says he remains determined to compete at the highest level and believes he still has plenty to offer on the pitch.

“I did not come to Brazil to end my career. On the contrary. I signed with Botafogo until the end of 2028 because I still have ambition and the desire to win,” Ziyech said.

Ziyech targets goals and assists with Botafogo

Speaking to Africa Foot, Ziyech explained that the opportunity to move to Brazil came when he was searching for a new challenge.

The former Ajax and Chelsea player said he was attracted by the passion surrounding Brazilian football and Botafogo’s ambitions.

He is now hoping to make a significant contribution to the club by helping them achieve their targets.

“I want to play, score goals, provide assists, and help the team achieve its objectives. I know what I can still bring. Now it is up to me to prove it on the pitch,” he added.

Ziyech’s contract reportedly includes a monthly salary of around 850,000 Brazilian reals, equivalent to about $165,000, with performance-related incentives potentially taking the figure to one million reals, or approximately $195,000.

Moroccan star begins new chapter after Wydad spell

The move to Botafogo represents another chapter in Ziyech’s career after his brief stint with Wydad.

The Morocco international scored nine goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances for the Casablanca club before making the switch to Brazil.

Despite leaving Morocco, Ziyech stressed that the move does not weaken his connection with his country.

He said the decision was based on choosing an environment where he believes he can be happiest and produce his best performances.

For the Morocco international, the focus is now on proving that his Brazilian adventure is a new beginning rather than the final stage of a distinguished career.
