Orlando Pirates draw African Stars in CAF Champions League second round

Orlando Pirates will face Namibian champions African Stars in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The Buccaneers secured their place in the next stage with a 3-1 victory over La Cure Waves at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.

Pirates had to recover from an early goal by the visitors, but Kabelo Kgositsile, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Yanela Mbuthuma all found the net to complete the comeback.

Their opponents were confirmed after African Stars defeated Gabonese side Mangasport 2-0 at home. The result overturned Mangasport’s 3-1 win in the first leg, with African Stars progressing on the away goal rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.

Pirates will now meet African Stars in the second preliminary round as they attempt to reach the group stages of the competition.

The South African club were eliminated at this stage last season by St Eloi Lupopo. They also missed out in 2023/24, when Jwaneng Galaxy ended their campaign.

The first legs of the second preliminary round will be played from 16-18 October, with the return fixtures scheduled for 23-25 October.
