Grobler strikes late as Stellenbosch FC draw with Sekhukhune United

Stellenbosch FC secured a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United after Bradley Grobler scored with three minutes of regulation time remaining in their Betway Premiership match at Athlone Stadium on Friday.

Bethuel Muzeu had put the visitors ahead in the 63rd minute, but 38-year-old Grobler reacted sharply in the box to deny Sekhukhune United victory in Cape Town.

The match took time to settle, with both sides struggling to establish a rhythm in the opening stages. The first notable chance fell to former Stellenbosch forward Lehlogonolo Mojela, who headed wide.

Stellenbosch FC enjoyed a greater share of possession but were unable to turn that control into clear opportunities. Their work in the final third lacked precision, with the hosts failing to create meaningful attempts on goal before the interval.

Sekhukhune United broke the deadlock after Mojela’s initial effort took a significant deflection. Muzeu reacted quickest and guided the loose ball into the net from close range.

Stellenbosch FC came close to an immediate response five minutes later. Lehlogonolo Matlou found space inside the penalty area, but his shot struck the crossbar.

The home side continued to apply pressure as the game entered its closing stages. Their persistence was rewarded when Grobler met a cross from Siviwe Nkwali and supplied a close-range finish typical of a poacher to level the contest.

The result was Stellenbosch FC’s third draw in six league matches. Their record also includes one victory and two defeats.

Sekhukhune United recorded their second stalemate of the season, alongside two wins and two losses.
