Khoza names Wonderboy Makhubu as his toughest PSL opponent

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Malibongwe Khoza says Wonderboy Makhubu is the most difficult player he has faced in the PSL.

The 22-year-old centre-back identified the current Kruger United forward as his toughest domestic opponent during an exclusive interview published in the September edition of KICK OFF.

Khoza has established himself as an important figure in the defence of the reigning Betway Premiership champions. His growing reputation was strengthened by a Man of the Match performance in Sundowns’ recent 3-0 victory over Siwelele FC, prompting further talk of his potential as a future Bafana Bafana player.

However, when asked which attacker had caused him the greatest problems, Khoza immediately selected Makhubu.

“It’s Wonderboy Makhubu. I think that’s the only player I would say he gave me problems,” Khoza said.

The pair have faced one another in demanding domestic matches, including during Makhubu’s spells with Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC. The 29-year-old has since joined newly promoted Kruger United on loan.

Khoza explained that Makhubu’s physical strength, movement and ability to retain possession make him particularly challenging to defend against.

“He is everywhere; he wins balls everywhere. He is a big guy, and he is quick with his feet as well. He can hold the ball. It’s very difficult to play against a striker like that,” he added.

Sundowns have now turned their attention to their next fixture, against Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium on Saturday.

The club’s domestic preparations come as Khoza also monitors developments around Bafana Bafana. Pitso Mosimane has officially taken charge of the national team, while Khoza will be hoping to return to the squad after being left out of the latest preliminary selection.

Despite his omission, the defender’s performances for Sundowns have continued to underline his progress at club level. His display against Siwelele was another indication of the responsibility he has assumed within a side that remains the reigning Betway Premiership champion.

Khoza’s comments on Makhubu also reflect the demanding battles he has experienced against established PSL forwards since breaking into the Sundowns team. Among those opponents, he believes Makhubu stands alone as the one player who has consistently created the greatest difficulties.
