Safa presidential election: How Saturday’s vote between Sandile Zungu and Danny Jordaan will work

Sandile Zungu and Danny Jordaan will compete for the Safa presidency at the organisation’s elective congress at Midrand’s Vodacom World Dome on Saturday.

The proceedings will begin on Friday with a meeting of the national executive committee (NEC). One of the meeting’s responsibilities will be to determine which office bearer will be authorised to cast the deciding vote if the presidential election ends in a tie.

Regional delegates will join the NEC for the elective congress on Saturday. A presidential candidate must secure a majority of 50% plus one to be elected.

The voting pool comprises delegates from 52 Safa regions, 41 NEC members, 10 associate members and six representatives from the PSL. Each region is allocated four votes. The PSL representatives may vote only in the vice-presidential election.

There are 41 NEC members, excluding those who have been expelled. However, some regions have not yet completed their delegations. They include Fezile Dabi, Amajuba, Bojanala, Namakwa and ZF Mgcawu.

The elections will be overseen by governance committee chairperson Victor Mogajane.

The presidential contest will be the first election conducted. Its voting procedure is set out as follows:

– If there is only one nomination, that candidate will be declared elected. – If more than one candidate is nominated, the winner must receive 50% plus one of the votes in the first ballot. – If no candidate reaches that threshold, a second ballot will take place. The candidate with the most votes in that ballot will be elected. – Should the second ballot result in a tie, the outgoing president will have the casting vote in addition to their deliberative vote, unless they are a candidate or unable to fulfil that role for another reason. In those circumstances, an outgoing office bearer nominated by the outgoing Safa NEC will cast the deciding vote.

As the current term of office comes to an end, every NEC member will receive a certificate of appreciation. The certificates will recognise the leadership’s collective work, contribution and achievements during the term.

Safa also plans to invite the parents of Jayden Adams to the congress. A plaque will be presented in his memory, giving the association an opportunity to honour and remember him.

Delegates are due to receive a Bafana Bafana yellow jersey, a trolley bag, a watch and a diary. NEC members will also be given a yellow Bafana anthem jacket.
