Zamalek ask for ZED match postponement ahead of Al Ahly league derby

Zamalek have asked the Egyptian Clubs Association to postpone their Egyptian League Cup match against ZED because it falls only three days before their Egyptian Premier League meeting with Al Ahly.

The League Cup fixture is scheduled for 8 October, while the league match between Zamalek and Al Ahly is due to take place on 11 October.

Zamalek football director Abdel Nasser Mohamed confirmed the request through the club’s media centre.

“We have sent a letter to the Egyptian Clubs Association asking for our League Cup match against ZED, scheduled for 8 October, to be postponed, especially as the team has an important game against Al Ahly on 11 October in the sixth round of the Premier League,” he said.

Zamalek’s next league match is against Ghazl El Mahalla on 16 September.

The fifth round of the league will begin on Monday, 14 September, and finish on Wednesday, 16 September. The competition will then pause because of the international break, which ends on 6 October.

The meeting with Al Ahly will be played after the league resumes and forms part of the sixth round.

Zamalek have won their past three league matches after drawing their opening fixture of the season. They are second in the table on 10 points, level with Al Ahly but ahead on goal difference.

Pyramids lead the standings with 12 points.

Al Ahly dropped points for the first time this season in their latest match, drawing 1-1 with Al Mokawloon Al Arab. That result saw them move back into third place with 10 points.

Elsewhere, El Gouna, Asyut Petroleum, Smouha and Ghazl El Mahalla are still waiting for their first wins of the campaign.

Smouha are the only team yet to score a goal.
