Thabo Cele joins Mamelodi Sundowns after Kaizer Chiefs departure

Mamelodi Sundowns have completed the signing of 29-year-old midfielder Thabo Cele after his contract with Kaizer Chiefs was ended by mutual agreement.

Cele left Kaizer Chiefs earlier this week after being frozen out by head coach Fernando da Cruz, who made it clear from the beginning of his tenure that the midfielder did not form part of his plans.

His departure came despite Cele being regarded as an important player because of his performances since joining Kaizer Chiefs 18 months ago. Reports suggest his exit followed a disagreement with the club’s management over the direction of the team.

Sundowns believe Cele’s experience will strengthen their midfield, with the player having also enjoyed a successful spell in Portugal during his career.

The club announced his arrival in an unveiling video. Cele appeared delighted to have joined the Brazilians, picking up a landline phone and replying: “Hello. Yeah, sure, singifikile [I have arrived].”

His arrival is expected to provide competition and additional cover for Teboho Mokoena, who has carried a considerable workload in domestic and continental football.

Sundowns are seeking to remain competitive across every competition, including the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, after winning the CAF Champions League. The club have therefore moved to improve the depth and quality of their squad.

Cele’s signing also addresses the demands placed on Sundowns by a congested schedule, as well as the need to manage fatigue and injuries. A significant number of the club’s players make up the core of the South African national team, increasing the pressure on the squad.

The midfielder is Sundowns’ second major signing of the week. Defender Deano van Rooyen has also joined the club.

Sundowns are still expected to announce the signing of Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi, who would provide cover for Khuliso Mudau while he recovers from injury.
