Haaland matches Aguero’s Champions League record but wants more with Manchester City

Erling Haaland says he is “hungry for more” after reaching 59 Champions League goals in 59 appearances and equalling Sergio Aguero’s Manchester City scoring record in the competition.

The Norway striker scored twice in City’s 2-0 win against FC Porto on Tuesday, taking his total for Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City to 59.

His goals also brought him level with Aguero on 36 Champions League goals for Manchester City. Haaland moved beyond Tommy Johnson to become the club’s third-highest scorer in all competitions.

“Not bad – I think if you tell a young Erling Haaland this, he would be very happy,” said the 26-year-old.

“I’m really proud of these numbers but I’m only 26 and I’m hungry for more.”

Haaland has scored five goals in five matches this season and was again central to Manchester City’s successful start to their European campaign.

The result was particularly significant given Porto’s form. The Portuguese side had won their first five matches of the season and had not been beaten at home in 2026.

“The Champions League is always difficult, especially to play against the champions of their countries’ league,” Haaland said.

“It’s never easy and you need to appreciate every single goal in this competition because this competition is special and I’m super happy to have scored two goals.”

Porto were supported by a passionate home crowd, and Haaland expected City to face a demanding contest before they secured victory.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game, and they were going to come fight in an amazing stadium with the fans behind them so well done to them,” he said.

“But we managed to fight and to keep the ball. We were good enough so in the end we got the win.”

The forward has continued his strong form after helping Norway reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Haaland acknowledged the physical and mental demands of the tournament but said he was concentrating on adapting to the new season.

“I feel quite good to be honest,” he said. “Of course we need a few games to get into the season, and they were not easy because it’s a long season, but you have to try to get through it.”

“The World Cup was a huge thing, of course physically and mentally and it will take time to digest all these crazy things that happened in the US.”

Manchester City’s next fixture is against AFC Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

“But it’s about taking it day by day, game by game and trying not to think too much and try to look ahead because we can only do things from the present moment, not in the past or future,” Haaland said.
