Andoni Iraola praises Liverpool’s comeback as he dismisses Bradley Barcola injury fears

Andoni Iraola praised Liverpool’s character after they recovered from a difficult start to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their opening Champions League league-phase match.

Liverpool fell behind but turned the game around at Anfield, where Iraola said the atmosphere had been exceptional. He also confirmed that Bradley Barcola’s late withdrawal was caused by cramp rather than a serious injury.

“It is difficult to ask for more,” Iraola told TNT Sports. “I think we showed great character, especially from the players after the difficult start.”

He added: “I loved it. The atmosphere was amazing and I feel lucky to have experienced it.

“I take responsibility for the start because they surprised me a little tactically. They played with five defenders in a 5-3-2. We expected something different and it took us some time to correct that.”

Liverpool improved considerably after the interval, according to Iraola, who felt they became the stronger side as the match progressed.

“After half-time we played a much better game, we pressed better and I think we were the better team,” he said.

Addressing concerns over injuries, Iraola said Barcola had only suffered cramp and suggested the forward had been brought back into action faster than planned.

“No, it was just cramp, especially with Bradley Barcola,” he said. “We are pushing him a little quicker than we should.

“We wanted him to be there, but in the end we decided to tell him to give us everything he had. That was all he could give. We will see how he is after recovering ahead of the next match.”

Iraola admitted Liverpool still needed to improve their performances at the beginning of matches, but was pleased with the response that secured victory.

“We still have work to do to improve our starts to games, but I am happy that we showed character,” he said.

He concluded: “This is the Champions League and there are no easy matches.”

Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture is against Austrian side LASK on 14 October. Atletico Madrid will face Manchester United on 13 October in the same competition.

The Champions League league phase features 36 teams, with each club playing eight matches.

The top eight sides in the standings will advance directly to the last 16. Teams finishing from ninth to 16th will enter a play-off.
