Barcelona’s Champions League clean-sheet hoodoo continues despite Feyenoord rout

Barcelona began their UEFA Champions League league-phase campaign with a commanding 5-1 victory over Feyenoord on Wednesday, but the emphatic result failed to end a long-running defensive problem in Europe.

The Catalan side overwhelmed their Dutch visitors at Spotify Camp Nou, securing a convincing opening win in the competition. However, Feyenoord’s goal meant Barcelona once again failed to keep a clean sheet in the Champions League.

According to Stats Foot, Barcelona have now conceded in each of their past 16 matches in the competition. That is the longest such run in the club’s history, underlining a defensive weakness that has continued despite a five-goal performance at the other end of the pitch.

Barcelona’s last Champions League clean sheet came in April 2025, when they defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-0. Since then, they have conceded 31 goals across 16 matches in the tournament.

The sequence means the club’s defensive difficulties have not been resolved by their latest convincing home victory. Although the five-goal result gave Barcelona a strong start to their league-phase campaign, they were unable to prevent their opponents from finding the net once again.

Translated, that means Barcelona have conceded at least one goal in each of their last 16 Champions League matches, their worst run in the competition.

The unwanted streak now stretches back beyond the club’s most recent clean sheet against Borussia Dortmund. While Barcelona’s attack produced enough to secure a comfortable margin of victory against Feyenoord, the concession ensured the defensive record remained the central concern after the opening match.

Their 5-1 success nevertheless provides a positive start in terms of points and attacking output. But the failure to shut out Feyenoord means Barcelona must wait longer to end a record defensive sequence that has become one of the defining features of their recent Champions League campaigns.

With 31 goals conceded over the 16-game period, Barcelona’s European clean-sheet drought remains firmly in place, even after one of their most decisive wins in the competition during that spell.
