Gabriel Jesus scores first Barcelona goal as Feyenoord are beaten 5-1

Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal for Barcelona as the Spanish side began their Champions League campaign with a 5-1 victory over Feyenoord at Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.

The Brazil forward came off the bench to replace Dani Olmo and needed only two minutes to make an impact. Jesus completed the scoring in the 85th minute, adding Barcelona’s fifth goal and putting the final touch to an emphatic win over the Dutch club.

His goal was created by Spain international Lamine Yamal, who had earlier added Barcelona’s fourth with a superb direct free-kick in the 77th minute. Yamal’s effort went through the defensive wall and gave the hosts a commanding advantage before Jesus completed the result.

The goal was Jesus’ second appearance for Barcelona since joining the club. He made his debut only a few days earlier in a 5-0 victory against Valencia in La Liga at Mestalla.

Barcelona signed Jesus in the final stages of the summer transfer window after the club concluded that a move for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez would not be possible. The Brazilian has now opened his scoring account for his new side after making his first appearance as a substitute against Valencia.

The win also extended Barcelona’s remarkable attacking start to the season. They have scored five goals in four of their first five competitive matches. The only game in that sequence in which they failed to reach five goals was their 2-0 La Liga victory over Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona’s goal tally has now reached at least 22 in their opening five competitive matches of the campaign. It is the first time they have achieved that mark since 1950, when the team was managed by the Czechoslovak coach Ferdinand Daucik.

The result against Feyenoord therefore combined two notable milestones: Jesus’ first goal in Barcelona colours and a scoring record that had not been matched by the club at the start of a season for 76 years.

Barcelona’s performance, together with Yamal’s free-kick and Jesus’ late finish, ensured that their return to Champions League action ended with a convincing scoreline. The Brazilian’s arrival from the bench provided the final highlight of a night in which the Catalan side continued their exceptional early-season scoring form.
