Majoro praises Mailula’s immediate impact after Sundowns return

Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo Majoro says Cassius Mailula has made an immediate impression since returning to Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 25-year-old forward rejoined Sundowns at the start of the season after his move to Toronto FC failed to develop as hoped. Mailula had left the Brazilians for Major League Soccer in 2023 following an impressive campaign with the South African club.

However, opportunities were limited during his time in North America. He subsequently spent time on loan at Wydad and Kortrijk before returning to Sundowns.

Mailula has made a strong start since coming back to South Africa, scoring four goals in nine appearances across all competitions. His contribution has also helped Sundowns reach the MTN8 final for the first time since 2021.

Majoro said Mailula’s performances suggested the player had settled back into the team without any difficulty.

“I must say, Mailula’s return – he is really putting on a show, and it’s like he never left,” Majoro told iDiski Times.

“That’s how you reintroduce yourself back to your supporters.

“That’s what happiness does, and I believe he’s the true definition of how the struggles that I’ve gone through will never determine my destination.”

Majoro was speaking to iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganyago for edition 271 of the newspaper. He used the interview to underline how impressed he had been by Mailula’s influence since his return to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mailula’s four goals have come during a period in which he has quickly re-established himself at the club. His performances have coincided with Sundowns’ progress in the MTN8, where they will contest the final for the first time since 2021.

The forward’s return follows a difficult spell after his move away from South Africa. Although he had produced an impressive season before joining Toronto FC in 2023, a lack of regular game-time meant he was later sent out on loan to Wydad and Kortrijk.

Majoro’s comments focus on the contrast between that period and Mailula’s encouraging start after coming back to Sundowns. The former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker described the player’s form as evidence of the positive effect that renewed happiness can have on a footballer.
