Rulani Mokwena keeps Pyramids FC perfect with win over El Gouna

Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids FC maintained their perfect start to the Egyptian Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over El Gouna on Wednesday.

The result means Pyramids have won all four of their league matches, collecting 12 points and returning to the top of the table. They are two points clear of Zamalek.

Mokwena, who joined the Egyptian giants during the off-season, has now overseen an ideal beginning to his time in Egypt. Pyramids have also kept a clean sheet in their latest victory, continuing the strong defensive record that has accompanied their unbeaten start.

The only goal at the match came in the 56th minute, when El Gouna defender Khaled Ahmed turned the ball into his own net. That proved enough to secure another three points for the 2024/25 CAF Champions League winners.

Pyramids had the opportunity to establish a more comfortable lead later in the match, but Nasser Maher missed a penalty after 72 minutes.

There was further late drama when Mostafa Ziko appeared to have scored Pyramids’ second goal in the 90th minute. However, the effort was ruled out after a review by the video assistant referee.

Despite missing the penalty and having a late goal disallowed, Pyramids held on to extend their 100% league record. Their latest success also saw them reclaim first place from Zamalek.

Mokwena’s arrival in the off-season followed Pyramids’ triumph in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League, and his side have begun the new domestic campaign without dropping a point. The win over El Gouna adds to that perfect run and gives Pyramids a two-point advantage at the summit after four matches.

The result continues what has been a flawless start for Mokwena since taking charge of the Egyptian club. Pyramids have combined four league victories with four clean sheets, while their latest match was decided by a single own goal.

Pyramids had begun their campaign strongly and remain the only side mentioned at the top of the standings with a maximum 12 points from four games. Zamalek are their nearest challengers, two points behind after the latest round of matches.

Mokwena’s side will now look to preserve that position as the season develops, having already established a perfect early record in the Egyptian Premier League.
