Hakim Ziyech arrives in Rio ahead of Botafogo transfer

Hakim Ziyech has arrived in Rio de Janeiro to complete his move to Brazilian club Botafogo, with the Morocco international set to undergo a medical and finalise the remaining details of his contract.

The 33-year-old was greeted at Galeao International Airport by a group of Botafogo supporters, who gathered to welcome a player expected to become one of the club’s headline signings.

Ziyech is a free agent after leaving Wydad Casablanca by mutual agreement, in circumstances previously detailed exclusively by Africafoot. He is expected to sign a contract with Botafogo running until December 2028.

The transfer will only become official once the final contractual matters have been resolved and the player has completed his medical examination. Botafogo are then expected to present him as their newest signing.

Ziyech’s move to Brazil represents the latest chapter in a career that has included spells with Ajax Amsterdam, Chelsea, Galatasaray and Al Duhail. During his time at Chelsea, he won the Champions League in 2021.

His arrival also carries historical significance for Moroccan football. Ziyech is expected to become the fourth Moroccan player to play in Brazil, following Mohamed El Arouch, who played for Botafogo in 2024, Noussair Jilal of Capivariano Futebol Clube and Zakaria Labyad of Corinthians.

Labyad is reported to have played a part in encouraging Ziyech to take up the Brazilian opportunity. His role in the discussions was revealed exclusively by Africafoot.

Botafogo are hoping Ziyech’s international experience and attacking qualities will add creativity, technical ability and leadership to their squad. His market value is estimated at €2.2m by Transfermarkt.

The Morocco international arrives at Botafogo with a reputation built on his ability to create chances and influence matches from advanced positions. The club believe his experience at major European sides and in international football can strengthen their campaign.
