Salah Eddine Bouziani: USM Alger midfielder faces defining test in 2026-27

Salah Eddine Bouziani has reached a pivotal stage of his development after moving to USM Alger, with the 20-year-old now expected to turn his undoubted potential into consistent performances in the Algerian Ligue 1.

Bouziani is one of 25 young players featured in the #TalentsAlgeriens series, which identifies prospects to watch during the 2026-27 season. The selection takes into account more than natural ability, considering each player’s potential, expected role at club level and the importance of the campaign to their progress.

For Bouziani, the coming season represents a significant change in expectations. Having developed through JS Saoura, the FAF Academy in Sidi Bel Abbes and Paradou AC, he has now joined USM Alger in a transfer worth about 80 million dinars, approximately 500,000 euros.

The move comes after an important year in which he helped Algeria’s Under-21 side win the Mediterranean Games in Taranto. He played a significant role in the midfield of Brahim Hemdani’s team and has already accumulated considerable first-team experience in Ligue 1.

That experience sets him apart from several other young players in the series. Bouziani is not arriving at a major club to discover senior football for the first time. He was promoted to the Paradou AC first team in the summer of 2024, when he was 18, and is now preparing for his third season at senior level.

His progress, however, took time.

A talent identified in Bechar

In December 2019, when Bouziani was only 14, Arezki Remmane spotted him playing for a small team in Bechar. Remmane, a former Algeria Under-17 coach and coach at the FAF Academy who is now technical director of USM Alger, immediately recognised the youngster’s ability.

Bouziani’s physical development was slower than his footballing progress. A growth delay meant he was not selected for the Under-17 teams managed by Remmane, forcing him to wait while his body caught up with his talent.

He subsequently joined JS Saoura before spending three years at the FAF Academy in Sidi Bel Abbes under Remmane. He then continued his development at Paradou AC, a club known for giving young players a pathway into senior football.

Those who worked with him at Paradou have consistently highlighted his technical quality. Azzedine Ait Djoudi, who coached him there, regards him as a highly gifted midfielder with considerable control and the natural characteristics of a box-to-box player.

Abdelkader Bouchaala, a youth coach who has worked with CR Belouizdad and USM Alger and is now at MC Alger, has also followed Bouziani’s development. His assessment is that the midfielder is not merely someone who can receive the ball frequently; he can use possession to move his team forward.

Mehdi Aggoun, who knew Bouziani at Paradou before joining MC Alger, has compared his style with that of another midfielder from Algeria’s south-west. The comparison relates to their footballing characteristics rather than their status: mobility, energy, the ability to operate in different midfield areas and technical quality.

A new challenge at USM Alger

The transfer to USM Alger changes the demands placed on Bouziani. Paradou’s environment has traditionally centred on the development of young footballers. At USM Alger, immediate results, competition for places and the pressure surrounding the team carry greater importance.

The midfielder’s place in the side will depend on the decision of coach N’Diaye. Several young players, including Limane and Achouri, are also waiting for opportunities, creating further competition within the squad.

Bouziani’s advantage is that he is no longer a newcomer to senior football. His challenge is to reproduce his best displays regularly rather than show flashes of promise.

Sofiane Benkhelifa, a coach and youth developer who has worked with USM Alger, Olympique Akbou and ES Setif, has no doubts about Bouziani’s footballing ability. But his assessment also carries a warning: talent alone will not be enough at his new club.

At 14, Bouziani had to wait for his physical development to catch up with his technical ability. At 20, that explanation is no longer available. The question now is whether he can establish himself as a reliable performer for USM Alger throughout the 2026-27 season.
