Mamelodi Sundowns close in on Bafana Bafana defender Thabang Matuludi

Mamelodi Sundowns have won the race to sign Bafana Bafana right-back Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, with a medical examination the final step before the move can be officially announced.

The 27-year-old, who was included in the South Africa squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has attracted significant interest during the current transfer window. Orlando Pirates were also pursuing the defender, who is regarded as one of the leading attacking full-backs in the league.

However, sources have confirmed to iDiski Times that Sundowns have reached an agreement with Polokwane City, known as Rise and Shine, and have also settled personal terms with Matuludi. The routine medical is now the only outstanding requirement before the transfer is formally confirmed.

Matuludi is expected to strengthen Sundowns’ options on the right side of defence, alongside Deano van Rooyen, following the long-term injury suffered by Khuliso Mudau. Mudau’s injury is expected to rule him out for most of the 2026/27 campaign.

Sundowns have also agreed a two-year contract with Thabo Cele, who will join the club as a free agent after leaving Kaizer Chiefs this week. Van Rooyen is also set to arrive following his departure from Orlando Pirates.

The moves underline Sundowns’ efforts to reinforce their squad in response to the defensive setback involving Mudau. Matuludi and Van Rooyen will provide additional cover and competition in the right-back position for the new campaign.

Masandawana have been linked with several midfielders from South America in recent weeks. However, iDiski Times understands that a foreign signing in that position is unlikely to take place during the current transfer window.

Matuludi has made 72 top-flight appearances for Polokwane City, scoring six goals and providing two assists. He joined the club five years ago from amateur side The Dolphins, when Polokwane City were competing in the second tier.

His development from the amateur game to becoming a regular top-flight defender and a member of the Bafana Bafana squad has made him one of the more sought-after domestic players in the current window.

Sundowns are yet to make an official announcement on the transfer, with Matuludi’s medical still to be completed. The club’s agreement with Polokwane City and the player’s personal terms have already been finalised, according to sources.
