Nigeria FA appoints Augustine Eguavoen as interim Super Falcons head coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as the interim head coach of the Super Falcons ahead of their upcoming 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.

Eguavoen will take temporary charge of the Nigerian women’s national team as the federation continues its search for a permanent head coach.

His first assignment will be the Super Falcons’ Olympic qualifying fixtures against Comoros, with the former Nigeria international expected to quickly get the team ready for the crucial encounters.

Eguavoen brings considerable experience at international level, having worked with several Nigerian national teams over the years. He famously guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The former defender has also taken charge of the senior men’s national team on an interim basis on previous occasions, giving him extensive knowledge of Nigerian football and the demands that come with managing the country’s national teams.

He will be supported by a coaching team that includes Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma, who has been appointed as his assistant.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa has also joined the technical team and will be responsible for working with the Super Falcons’ goalkeepers.

Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf has equally been appointed as an assistant coach, bringing her experience as a former international player into the setup.

The NFF will hope the new interim technical team can guide the Super Falcons through the Olympic qualifiers successfully while the federation continues discussions over the appointment of a permanent coach.

Eguavoen’s immediate task will be to organise the squad, maintain the team’s competitive level and ensure Nigeria make a strong start to their quest to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games.
