Federico Valverde surpasses 75-match Champions League tally in Real Madrid win

Federico Valverde scored his fourth UEFA Champions League goal in five matches as Real Madrid began their league-phase campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

The Uruguay international struck Real Madrid’s second goal in the 23rd minute, taking advantage of a serious mistake by the Inter goalkeeper to put the home side ahead in their opening European fixture.

Valverde’s latest effort continued an impressive run in the competition. According to Opta, the Real Madrid captain has scored four goals in his past five UEFA Champions League appearances for the club one more than he managed across his first 75 matches in the tournament.

Opta’s original statistical post read:

The figure means Valverde’s recent scoring return has already surpassed his entire total from his first 75 Champions League games. He had scored only three times in those opening 75 appearances before finding the net four times in his last five matches.

His goal against Inter came during a lively first half at the Bernabeu, where Real Madrid faced the Italian side in the opening round of the league phase. The Spanish club ultimately secured a 2-1 win over the Nerazzurri.

The result gave Real Madrid a successful start to their European campaign, with Valverde once again making an important contribution in front of goal. His scoring form has added another dimension to his role in the team, having traditionally been recognised for his energy and all-round midfield work.

Real Madrid will play their second league-phase match in the competition on 14 October, when they travel to the Italian capital. Before then, they will return to domestic action in La Liga with a match against Rayo Vallecano on 12 October.

Valverde’s latest Champions League goal therefore not only helped Real Madrid claim victory against Inter Milan but also marked a notable personal milestone. In the space of five matches, he has moved beyond the number of goals he recorded during his first 75 appearances in Europe’s leading club competition.
