Morena Ramoreboli leaves Botswana role to join Pitso Mosimane’s Bafana Bafana staff

Morena Ramoreboli has left his position as Botswana head coach to become assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane with the South Africa national team, Bafana Bafana.

The appointment was announced by the South African Football Association (SAFA) as South Africa prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this month.

Ramoreboli, 45, had been in charge of Botswana’s senior men’s national team, known as The Zebras, since January 2025. He oversaw 12 matches during his time in the role after departing Botswana Premier League club Jwaneng Galaxy.

SAFA and the Botswana Football Association (BFA) confirmed that Ramoreboli would now move across to the Bafana Bafana technical team, where he will work alongside head coach Pitso Mosimane.

“The South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Botswana Football Association (BFA) would like to announce that Coach Morena Ramoreboli will leave his position as Head Coach of the Botswana Senior Men’s National Team, The Zebras, to join the Bafana Bafana technical team as Assistant Coach to Head Coach Pitso Mosimane, ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

“The transition reflects the strong footballing relationship between the two neighbouring countries and provides Ramoreboli with an opportunity to continue his coaching journey at the highest level of African football. Both Associations acknowledge his significant contribution to Botswana football during his tenure and wish him every success as he begins this new chapter.”

The move means Ramoreboli returns to the Bafana Bafana set-up in a coaching capacity after previously helping the national side win the 2021 COSAFA Cup.

His latest appointment comes at an important stage for South Africa, with the team preparing for the next round of 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Mosimane will be supported by Ramoreboli as Bafana Bafana begin their preparations for the qualifying campaign.

Ramoreboli’s departure also brings his spell as Botswana coach to an early close after less than a full year in charge. His 12-match tenure followed his work with Jwaneng Galaxy in the Botswana Premier League.

The announcement reflects the close footballing links between the neighbouring countries, with both national associations formally recognising his contribution to Botswana football while confirming his new responsibilities with South Africa.

SAFA’s announcement follows other recent updates around the national team, including information concerning outstanding World Cup bonuses and the publication of the Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON qualifiers.

Ramoreboli will now join Mosimane’s coaching staff as South Africa’s focus turns to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
