Donnarumma left out as 2026 Yashin Trophy shortlist is announced

Gianluigi Donnarumma has been omitted from the 2026 Yashin Trophy shortlist, just months after being named the world’s best goalkeeper for the second time.

The Italy captain was absent when the 10-man list for this year’s award was announced on Tuesday morning. The Yashin Trophy is presented as part of the Ballon d’Or awards to recognise the best goalkeeper in the world.

Donnarumma’s exclusion is his first from the shortlist in three years. He was the reigning holder of the award after winning the 2025 prize, having helped Paris Saint-Germain secure the first Champions League title in the club’s history at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The final nominations include goalkeepers from clubs across Europe, Saudi Arabia and South America. Morocco’s Yassine Bounou is included after his performances for Al Hilal, while Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Barcelona’s Joan Garcia are also among the nominees.

No Italian goalkeeper features on the list, while there is also no nominee currently playing in Serie A. Donnarumma’s omission means that the 2026 shortlist contains no representation from either of those groups.

The 27-year-old is one of only two goalkeepers to have won the Yashin Trophy twice. He previously claimed the award in 2021 before adding the 2025 honour. The other two-time winner is Argentina international Emiliano Martinez, who was recognised in 2023 and 2024.

Donnarumma’s absence comes after he left Paris Saint-Germain for Manchester City in the summer of 2025. During his first season with City, he made 43 appearances in all competitions, conceding 41 goals and recording 18 clean sheets.

He also collected two trophies with the club, winning the FA Cup and the League Cup. However, he did not play in a match in either competition.

His omission marks a notable change from the previous two editions of the award. Donnarumma’s 2025 victory followed a season in which Paris Saint-Germain completed their long-awaited breakthrough in the Champions League, but his move to Manchester City has not resulted in a place among the 10 goalkeepers nominated for the latest prize.

The winner of the 2026 Yashin Trophy will be selected from the announced shortlist as part of the Ballon d’Or awards.
