Oswin Appollis linked with Orlando Pirates exit and possible move to France

Bafana Bafana international Oswin Appollis could become the latest Orlando Pirates player to move abroad, with reports suggesting an unnamed French club has registered an interest in the forward.

However, any move to France would not be completed during the current transfer window. The Ligue 1 window closed on 1 September, meaning a potential new club would only be able to register Appollis in January.

The 23-year-old could still agree to a transfer before then. He may remain with Orlando Pirates for the first half of the season, join another club temporarily or spend the entire campaign on loan at a destination selected by his parent club.

Appollis has made a productive, although not entirely convincing, start to the season with the Buccaneers. He has scored twice and provided two assists in five league appearances, while his total across all competitions stands at nine.

His form has not yet reached the level he produced during his first season at Orlando Pirates, when he quickly established himself as one of the club’s key players.

Appollis played an important role as Pirates secured a domestic treble, winning the Betway Premiership, MTN8 and Carling Knockout. His performances for the club also earned him greater prominence with the South Africa national team.

He helped Bafana Bafana qualify for the Fifa World Cup, where they reached the Round of 32.

That impressive campaign led to Appollis being nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season award. He narrowly missed out, with the prize going to his Orlando Pirates team-mate Relebohile Mofokeng.

Mofokeng has since left South Africa for Belgium, joining Jupiler Pro League club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. His departure is part of a wider series of high-profile exits from Orlando Pirates in recent months.

Patrick Maswanganyi, Deano van Rooyen and Sipho Mbule have also moved on, leaving the club facing the possibility of losing another established first-team player if the reports concerning Appollis prove accurate.

The potential interest from France could also provide context for Pirates’ decision to re-sign Mohau Nkota on a season-long loan from Al Ettifaq. Nkota’s return gives the club another option while the future of Appollis remains uncertain.

For now, there has been no confirmation of the identity of the French club or whether a formal offer has been made. Any transfer involving Appollis would therefore be expected to develop ahead of the January registration window, unless he spends the intervening period at Orlando Pirates or moves elsewhere on loan.
