Championship side Shelfield United set to sign Ghana forward Jordan Ayew

English Championship side Shelfield United are close to signing Jordan Ayew on a free transfer, according to reports in the UK.

The Ghana captain has been without a club since leaving Leicester City following their Championship relegation at the end of last season.

Blackburn Rovers and Burnley have all reportedly made approaches for the experienced forward, but Sheffield United appears to be the most likely destination at this stage.

Ayew made 42 Championship appearances for Leicester during the 2025-26 campaign, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 league matches.

Shelfield have turned to the free-agent market as they aim to improve their squad.

The experienced Ghanaian can play as a centre-forward or on either wing, offering the Championship side greater flexibility in attack.

Ayew brings more than a decade of experience, having spent 11 years playing in English football, having previously represented Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Aston Villa in the Premier League after beginning his European career with French club Marseille.

Meanwhile, Jordan Ayew is expected to be unveiled on Friday, September 11, when he turns 35. 

He is expected to make Ghana’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Ivory Coast and The Gambia.
