Rodri’s on-camera comments expose Valencia’s lack of resistance in Barcelona rout

Rodri’s candid assessment of Valencia’s performance was caught by television cameras during Barcelona’s 5-0 victory at Mestalla last Sunday, after the midfielder told team-mate Pau Cubarsi that the home side had offered remarkably little resistance.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Rodri was speaking from the substitutes’ bench after being replaced by Marc Bernal in the 62nd minute, with Barcelona already leading 3-0. Cubarsi was taken off at the same time, making way for Christensen, and sat alongside Rodri as the match continued.

Rodri’s comments, delivered in several separate remarks rather than as one continuous statement, were picked up by cameras belonging to Movistar Plus. He did not cover his mouth while speaking.

“Very weak, these… Very weak. They’re very bad, man. They’re extremely bad. How did they finish last season in the standings? They didn’t get beyond the halfway line in the second half…,” Rodri told Cubarsi.

The footage has left viewers to decide whether Rodri’s words amounted to disrespect towards Valencia or were simply an unusually frank assessment shared during what he believed was a private conversation with a team-mate.

The incident also appeared to underline two lessons Rodri had learned after making his first start for Barcelona in La Liga. The midfielder had returned to the competition after spending seven seasons in the Premier League.

The first, Mundo Deportivo reported, was that every away match in England carried a certain intensity, with home teams consistently showing a level of resistance that Rodri had not seen in the same way in La Liga.

The second was that Spanish television programmes were prepared to capture almost everything that happened. That meant players would be better advised to cover their mouths when talking to team-mates, whether on the pitch or away from it.

Rodri appeared to forget both points at Mestalla. His remarks were made while Barcelona were in complete control of the contest and went on to extend their advantage to 5-0 by the final whistle.

The newspaper suggested that the wider reaction served as a reminder to Rodri that some people in Spain had not forgiven his decision to join Barcelona, despite Real Madrid also wanting to sign him.

His words therefore attracted attention beyond the immediate criticism of Valencia’s display. They were recorded during a one-sided match, but also highlighted the scrutiny surrounding Rodri after choosing Barcelona over their major domestic rivals.

Barcelona’s emphatic result left Valencia unable to respond after the interval, with Rodri specifically remarking that the hosts had not crossed the halfway line during the second half. The midfielder’s comments, now publicly available through the television footage, have prompted debate over whether they were an example of ordinary dressing-room honesty or an unnecessary public slight.
