Quique Sanchez Flores has been named La Liga’s best manager for August after guiding Deportivo Alaves to two victories and a draw during the opening month of the season.
The Spanish coach was chosen ahead of Jose Mourinho, who had made an impressive start with Real Madrid, and Hansi Flick, whose Barcelona side also recorded three wins.
Sanchez Flores earned his place among the nominees after Alaves defeated Getafe and Villarreal, while also drawing with Rayo Vallecano. Those results left the club fourth in the table at the end of August, with seven points, behind Atletico Madrid only on goal difference.
It was enough to see the Deportivo Alaves manager claim the monthly award despite the strong opening campaigns enjoyed by Mourinho and Flick.
Mourinho had led Real Madrid to three wins from three league matches. His side began the season with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol before following it up with a 4-1 win against Real Sociedad.
Real Madrid completed their perfect August record by beating Malaga 4-0. Across those three matches, Mourinho’s team scored 10 goals and conceded only twice.
Flick was also included among the candidates after overseeing three victories with Barcelona. His side scored 12 goals during the month and conceded two.
Barcelona opened their campaign with a 5-0 success against Elche. They then defeated Athletic Club 2-0 before finishing August with a 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano.
That run placed Barcelona top of La Liga at the end of the month, level on points with Real Madrid but ahead on goal difference.
Sanchez Flores’ award therefore came in a closely contested month, with all three nominated managers making unbeaten starts to the league campaign. Alaves’ results against Getafe, Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano secured seven points, while Mourinho and Flick each guided their teams to three consecutive victories.
Despite Real Madrid and Barcelona’s greater attacking returns, the award went to Sanchez Flores after his work with Alaves helped the club establish itself among the leading sides in the early league table.
