Maboe targets greater final-third impact after Kaizer Chiefs win

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe says he is working to become more influential in the final third after helping his side return to winning ways in the Betway Premiership.

The 31-year-old was named Man of the Match following another impressive display in midfield as Amakhosi edged Siwelele FC 3-2 at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

The victory allowed Fernando Da Cruz’s side to respond positively after dropping points in their previous match. It also lifted the Glamour Boys into third place in the league standings.

Maboe has established himself as an important figure in the centre of the pitch since joining Kaizer Chiefs in 2025. His performances have provided energy and control in midfield, while he has also contributed directly to the side’s attacking play.

He has scored once and supplied two assists in six appearances across all competitions this season. However, the experienced midfielder believes he can offer more when his team reaches the attacking third of the pitch.

“We knew that we had to bounce back. We dropped a couple of points in our last game,” Maboe told SuperSport TV.

“This is the only way to bring ourselves back, and I’m really, really delighted with my teammates. We really, really fought for this one tonight.

“Yeah, reflecting on the off-season, if there’s one thing that I picked up, it’s that I need to be a lot more involved in the final third. I need to assist more and score goals.

“So yeah, this is something that I’m really, really working hard on getting perfect in my game.”

Maboe’s comments came after a result that ended Kaizer Chiefs’ immediate run without a win and strengthened their position near the top of the Betway Premiership table.

While his current record includes one goal and two assists, he has identified improving his numbers in front of goal and creating more opportunities for team-mates as a key personal objective.

The midfielder’s contribution against Siwelele FC was recognised with the match award, but he also stressed the collective effort required to secure the points. Kaizer Chiefs had to withstand a competitive challenge before completing the 3-2 victory at Dobsonville Stadium.

The result gives Da Cruz’s team an opportunity to build momentum as the league campaign continues. Their next chance to extend that winning run will come away from home against Polokwane City.

Kaizer Chiefs will visit Polokwane City in their next league match on Saturday, September 12, with Maboe aiming to continue developing the attacking aspect of his game.
