Arthur Okonkwo named in Nigeria squad for AFCON qualifiers against Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau

Charlton Athletic have announced that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been called up to the Nigeria squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The 24-year-old has been included in the Super Eagles squad after making four appearances for the Addicks since joining the club on a season-long loan from Wrexham.

Okonkwo has quickly established himself as part of Charlton’s goalkeeping options, and his performances have earned him another opportunity on the international stage.

The Nigeria international currently has two senior caps to his name, having made his debut during the Super Eagles’ Unity Cup triumph at The Valley in the summer of 2026.

Nigeria face crucial qualifiers

Nigeria will begin the upcoming international assignment at home when they welcome Madagascar on Friday, September 25, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm BST.

The Super Eagles will then travel to Guinea-Bissau four days later for their second qualifier, with that encounter also scheduled to start at 5pm BST on Tuesday, September 29.

Okonkwo’s inclusion gives him another chance to strengthen his position within the Nigeria setup as the country continues its campaign for qualification for the continental showpiece.

Charlton confirm international honour

For Charlton, Okonkwo’s selection represents further recognition of the goalkeeper’s growing profile since his arrival from Wrexham.

The Addicks confirmed the call-up as the goalkeeper prepares to temporarily switch club duties for international football and link up with Nigeria ahead of the two qualifiers.

Having already represented the Super Eagles twice, Okonkwo will now hope to add to his international appearances when Nigeria take on Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
