Arsenal fight back to beat Chelsea and make it three wins from three

Arsenal recovered from an early setback to beat Chelsea 2-1 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday evening and maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.

The defending champions were stunned in the opening seconds when big-name signing Morgan Rogers took advantage of a poor clearance before driving the ball into the bottom corner.

Arsenal responded through former Chelsea striker Kai Havertz, who punished his old club by bringing the hosts level. Declan Rice found Havertz on the far side, allowing him to cut inside before calmly placing his finish into the bottom corner.

The Gunners completed the turnaround five minutes after half-time. Their influential captain Martin Odegaard timed his run to perfection and finished a through ball from Christos Tzolis to put Arsenal ahead.

Chelsea had made a fast start, but Arsenal took control as the match progressed. The reigning champions demonstrated their quality after going behind and secured maximum points, extending their unbeaten beginning to the campaign.

The result was also Chelsea’s first defeat under manager Xabi Alonso.

Elsewhere, Manchester United twice surrendered the lead in the second half as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Merseyside.

United had travelled in search of successive victories after an impressive home performance against Ipswich Town, with the Red Devils hoping to continue their rise up the table. Everton, meanwhile, had needed a late effort to earn a point at Bournemouth in their previous outing.

Neither side could break the deadlock before the interval, but the match opened up after the restart. United struck first when Bryan Mbeumo moved quickly down the flank before reaching the edge of the penalty area and curling a shot into the bottom corner.

The visitors remained in front for much of the second half and appeared to be heading towards victory. Everton, however, levelled eight minutes before the end of normal time, with Tyrique George powering his effort into the top corner.

United then looked to have regained the advantage in the final two minutes of regulation time. Benjamin Sesko rose to meet the ball and produced a powerful header that seemed destined to secure three points for the Red Devils.

Everton refused to accept defeat, though, and found an equaliser in the closing seconds. Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck a superb effort to rescue a point for the Toffees and complete an eventful finish at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The draw meant United were unable to follow their emphatic display against Ipswich Town with back-to-back wins, while Everton recovered from falling behind twice to claim a share of the points.
