Cape Town City claim first win as Magesi move top of Motsepe Foundation Championship

Cape Town City secured their first victory of the 2026/27 season by beating Hungry Lions 2-1, while Magesi FC climbed to the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after completing three wins from three matches.

The Citizens began the campaign with a defeat and a draw, but responded with an impressive first-half display against Hungry Lions. Kayden Francis opened the scoring before Cheswyn Philander doubled Cape Town City’s advantage before the interval.

Hungry Lions made the closing stages uncomfortable for the home side when they reduced the deficit in the 86th minute. Cape Town City held on, however, to collect their first three points of the season.

Highbury FC also maintained their perfect start with a narrow victory over Upington City. The league leaders were held goalless in the first half, with neither Highbury nor their opponents Bafana Ba Gucci and Amajuba able to break the deadlock.

Lulama Maqoko eventually found the decisive goal after the interval. The result gave Highbury a third successive victory and moved them into second place in the Motsepe Foundation Championship table.

Magesi FC produced the weekend’s biggest comeback after falling behind against Leicesterford City. Leicesterford took the lead in the 39th minute and went into half-time 1-0 ahead.

Magesi turned the match around after the break by scoring three times. That secured all three points and sent them to the summit of the league table after three matches.

AmaTuks also collected their first maximum points of the campaign with a 2-0 win against Venda FC. Luvuyo Phewa and Sammy Darpoh scored for AmaTuks, who completed the match with 10 players after Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi was sent off.

There was also a victory for Hope FC in a meeting between two newly promoted teams. Samkelo Zwane scored in the first half as Hope FC defeated North West University away from home in North West.

The Bees’ difficult start continued with a 1-0 defeat by Gomora United. Real Native FC, meanwhile, claimed three important points on Friday after beating Midlands Wanderers.
